Description

A lawyer robe, also called a barrister robe, is the black open-front gown Canadian lawyers wear for court appearances and the call-to-bar ceremony. Barr’s version is cut specifically for that use. The fabric is a woven polyester matte weave, not shiny and not stiff. We chose it because it holds a crisp, formal drape in the courtroom, without the weight or dry-clean fuss of wool or wool-blend gowns. It also moves easily when you’re standing, walking to the bench, or sitting through a long ceremony. And it packs for travel without holding a crease the way heavier fabrics do.

Construction follows the standard Canadian barrister pattern: open front, full wide sleeves, and a gathered yoke at the shoulders for the gown’s characteristic fall. A back seam keeps the drape clean whether you’re standing still or moving through a courtroom. You wear it open over a waistcoat and wing-collar shirt, with tabs at the collar. We sell the robe on its own here. If you need the full outfit, see the call-to-bar package, or shop the barrister waistcoat, wing-collar shirt, and tabs separately.

Sizing runs by gender-specific height range, then by fit. Slim sits close through the shoulders and body for a tailored line. Regular is the standard cut most articling and practicing lawyers choose. Full gives extra room through the chest and sleeves, for wearing over a heavier waistcoat or just for personal preference. If you’re not sure which to pick, the barrister robe size guide walks through measuring at home before you order.

Lawyer robe, attorney robe, barrister robe, advocate robe: in Canadian court dress these all mean the same gown, just different regional or professional habits of speech. What this isn’t is a judicial or King’s Counsel (KC) robe. Those are the silk gowns worn by judges and KC-appointed lawyers, a separate and more formal garment Barr doesn’t currently stock. And unlike UK, Irish, or other Commonwealth call-to-bar traditions, Canadian barristers don’t wear wigs with this robe. Court dress here stops at the gown, tabs, and waistcoat.
