Barrister Waistcoat

Barr’s Barrister Waistcoat is cut from durable wool for a sharp, tailored line that holds its shape through a full sitting day or your call-to-bar ceremony. It comes in Men’s and Women’s cuts across Slim, Regular, and Full fits, with practical pockets built into the construction rather than sewn shut for looks. This is a barrister waistcoat made for legal dress specifically, not a generic formalwear piece pulled from a wedding rack.

Description

The shell is a mid-weight wool, chosen for structure over softness. It keeps a clean line under a robe all day and resists the creasing that lighter blends pick up after a few hours in court. This wool waistcoat is single-breasted with a five-button front and a straight bottom edge. The edge-stitching and lapel detail read as tailoring, not a rental-counter afterthought.

The two lower welt pockets are cut big enough to hold a phone or a pen. They’re sewn to lie flat instead of sagging once something’s in them. On most formalwear that’s a minor detail. That matters more on a barrister waistcoat, worn for long stretches through court proceedings. It’s the difference between a pocket you use and one that’s just there for the line of the garment.

Fit comes from a real Gender, Size, and Fit build, not a unisex block resized up or down. The male waistcoat cut sits straighter through the chest and drops slightly longer at the waist. The female waistcoat cut is shaped through the bust and waist for a closer line. It doesn’t pull at the buttons when you sit down. Both are offered in Slim, Regular, and Full. A waistcoat for ladies and a men’s cut come off separate patterns, not the same garment relabeled.

Under a robe, at a call-to-bar ceremony, or on its own with a wing-collar shirt, the waistcoat keeps the front of the outfit looking finished. That matters when the robe comes off for photos or a break. Pair it with Barr’s wing-collar shirt and tabs for the complete look. Check the Sizing accordion below before ordering if you’re between sizes.
